TWO THINGS FOR PARENTS TO READ AND TAKE ACTION FROM KATHY WEIDENBAUM

1)  Kathy Weidenbaum (Parent Prod Asst) will be collecting money from cast/crew members on Thursday and Friday of this week to buy nice director(s) gift(s) and for the cast to buy gifts for the crew. Please send in a check or preferably cash with your student (check made out to me is fine, Kathy Weidenbaum).  Suggested amount is around $10 or more, or whatever you can swing. This production is outstanding.  We owe a big thanks to our professional directors and the crew.

2)  The following explains what happens after closing night performance:

The crew performs a tongue-in-cheek performance for the cast -- a comical, mock version of the production. This crew performance contains material that parents may find offensive. But it's all in fun, and filled with "insider" type jokes for the cast/crew.  I advise parents NOT to attend this mock performance.  It's really all about and for the students. Then, the cast does a presentation of gifts to the director and crew. Jim always closes the onstage party with, "Make good decisions at your next destination."  We want students always to be careful and smart about everything after they leave the school grounds.

After the closing celebration at school, there's usually an all-night cast/crew party at one of the cast or crew member's house. This party is not a school-sponsored event. The families in the past who host these parties have always been very proactive and responsible about creating a no drinking, no drugs, and no sex venue.

The students are full of energy after closing.  They really enjoy spending time together at the all-night party.  It's all part of the theater experience at Lincoln, and helps them emotionally close down the show after being a big family for a couple of months.  Just so you know ......not every parent allows their student to go to the party, or they may allow their student to go to some of the party, but not spend the entire night.  This is a decision between you and your student. Your decision is respected.

If you have any other questions, please email Kathy atwillowcomm@aol.com

Dramaturge One On Ones

This week, starting Tuesday, our dramaturge, Avital, will be pulling each actor out of rehearsal for about 20 minutes to discuss pronunciation and anything you need to know about your character, the script, or Judaism in general. I would suggest thinking of some questions you might want to ask Avital.
If you are willing to come before rehearsal, please email or text me asap.

Student Dramaturge

For this show we have hired a dramaturge, Avital Shira, to do research on Kabbalah, Judaism, and turn of the century Poland. A dramaturge does research for plays and compiles information for the actors and director. We also need a student dramaturge to help her out. There will be interviews with Avital and me (Margot New) on Friday, March 15, during flex. Please email me, at margotnew17@gmail.com, if you have any interest. The requirements are:
  • Attendance to all rehearsals for first two weeks, and at least three rehearsals a week for the duration of the rehearsal process.
  • Help compile a research guide about turn of the century Poland, Judaism, and Kabbalah.
  • Ability to research any additional questions, as necessary, that the director has throughout rehearsals.
Avital will act as a mentor to the student dramaturge, teaching them about dramaturgy. Dramaturgy is a very useful skill to have in the theater world and in general. Please apply even if you are planning on auditioning. If you're cast in the show we'll cancel your interview for dramaturge.

Tech Interview Update!

Interviews for the technical crew will be on Monday, March 11, instead of the 12th. At the interviews I will be asking for people who is interested in being my assistant stage manager (ASM). If you have any interest in stage managing a show I suggest you apply for ASM.

Synopsis of A Dybbuk

A Dybbuk takes place in Poland at the turn of the century– for Jews a time of wretchedness, poverty and ever present terror from the prevailing local government. It is not difficult to understand why many devout souls became convinced that they would be delivered from their terrible tribulations by supernatural and mystical doctrines. To a poor, young, impressionable, sensitive, lonely, lovesick, Talmudic scholar, what else except the miraculous was there to place hope in?
The young rabbi, Chonen, is prevented from marrying Leah because he lacks the wealth her father, Sender, seeks for her. Chonen desperately tries to get riches by invoking Satan's help, but he dies at the very moment he is triumphantly crying out, "I have won!" Leah is distraught by Chonen's death, but she has little time to grieve, for she is betrothed to Menashe. On the night of her wedding, she visits her mother's grave; there she is possessed by a dybbuk, an alien spirit. It is Chonen's spirit. His spirit, unable to ascend to Heaven, must inhabit a human body. To exorcise this spirit, the family must go to Mirapol to consult the chief rabbis. Before the Dybbuk can be expelled, one of the rabbis, Rabbi Shimshin, has a dream. The dream reveals that as a youth, Sender and his friend Nissen had promised the betrothal of their yet unborn offspring, Leah and Chonen. The spirit of Nissen, who died shortly thereafter, now demands that Sender be brought to trial. The rabbinical court punishes Sender and exorcises the dybbuk amid much ceremony and shofar blowing. They also order the marriage of Leah and Menashe. But before the bridegroom can arrive, Leah dies and her spirit joins Chonen's. (Denver Center A Dybbuk Study Guide)
